Not Returning the Favor

Britain and the European Union are undergoing negotiations for when Britain will finally leave the EU in a year or so. A current negotiation that is being debated is Britain wanting the EU to protect their products from replication after Brexit. What this means is currently any products that are being sold in the EU market from UK are protected by the EU from any imitation and in the UK market, all products that are from EU are protected by the UK from any imitation. After the UK leaves the EU, they still want this deal to continue on with a few modifications. This being that the EU would still protect UK products from imitations, but the UK is still not fully committed to protecting EU products in the UK market. A reason that the UK hasn’t fully committed to enforcing the whole deal anymore is because, “Britain is desperate for a free trade agreement with the US after Brexit, and a report of objections to EU trade policies released this year by the US Trade Department says that “the United States remains troubled with the EU system that provides over broad protection of Geographical Indications” (Independent). The UK is trying to please many countries because it wants so much for its farmers, businesses and people. The only problem is that it may not work out as planned, the best option for the UK to go is to be committed to its deal with the EU and then make a trade agreement with the US and tell them the business they do elsewhere isn’t of their concern.

  1. I think it is interesting to see what is going to happen with the EU. I knew there were going to be a lot of problems between the UK and EU, but this just shows things are complicated. I am curious to see if this will ruin the relationship with the UK and EU.
