The 2018 Winter Olympics

I have grown up watching the Olympics. I look forward to watching them every other year. I love how all of the countries compete against each other for medals. Since the 2018 Winter Olympics are in session I figured it would be interesting to learn about how the UK is doing this year. The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. All of these countries are competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. As of right now the United Kingdom has received four medals: one gold and three bronze. The gold medal was won by Lizzy Yarnold in the Skeleton. If you don't know what Skeleton is it is a winter sledding sport in which a person rides a small sled (known as the skeleton) down a frozen track. Two of their bronze medals have also been won in the Skeleton. They were won by Dominic Parsons and Laura Deas. Their third bronze medal was won in freestyle skiing by a woman named Isabel Atkin. I found it very interesting that each country that makes up the UK didn't each have their own individual team competing at the Olympics. They all combine and make up the Great Britain team. The Picture below is Isabel Atkin after she won the freestyle skiing bronze medal.

  1. Madison,
I like the post that you have here. I like that the news that we read doesn't have to be all bad. I have been watching some of the Olympics on my TV, and it has been pretty crazy. Lots of crashes, and disappointment, but there is also a ton of good times, and when someone wins the gold, they feel so accomplished for all the hard work and dedication that they have put in. I did not know much about the United Kingdom in the Olympics, so it is neat to read some about them.

    1. It's interesting to watch the Olympic games in different countries or via other country broadcasts. The coverage is very different from country to country, and always a bit biased, naturally, to the athletes of their respective lands!
